Turmeric (Curcumin)
herbAlso known as: Curcumin, Curcuma longa, Turmeric Extract, Curcuminoids
About
Curcumin is one of the most studied anti-inflammatory compounds, with demonstrated NF-kB inhibition relevant to psoriasis, acne, and inflammatory skin conditions. The major limitation is oral bioavailability (< 1%); formulations with piperine increase absorption by 2,000%. A pilot study found curcumin may help support skin health in psoriasis.
How It Works
Active polyphenol curcumin inhibits NF-kB, AP-1, and STAT3 inflammatory signaling pathways; modulates COX-2 and LOX enzymes; may inhibit tyrosinase for depigmentation effects; antioxidant properties protect against oxidative stress in skin; low oral bioavailability (~1%) improved by piperine or lipid formulations.
