Several contributors are outside the reach of any supplement. Genetics determines periorbital skin thickness and tear-trough anatomy. Sleep deprivation causes vasodilation and pallor that makes underlying vessels more visible. Allergic rhinitis produces the venous congestion known as allergic shiners, which resolves when the allergy is managed. Dehydration and cumulative sun exposure each act on separate parts of the picture.
One contributor is worth medical attention. Iron deficiency anemia produces periorbital darkening through pallor and altered perfusion, and it is a systemic condition with a laboratory diagnosis and a straightforward correction. Dark circles that appear or deepen abruptly, particularly alongside fatigue or breathlessness, are a reason to look for a cause rather than a cosmetic problem to supplement.
