Mechanisms of Action

Phytoestrogen

Plant-derived compounds that can bind estrogen receptors and modulate hormonal activity.

Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring plant compounds with structural similarity to 17-beta-estradiol (human estrogen). They bind to estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ) with lower affinity than endogenous estrogen and can act as weak agonists or antagonists depending on endogenous estrogen levels. Major classes include isoflavones (soy), lignans (flaxseed), and prenylated flavonoids (hops — 8-prenylnaringenin is the most potent known phytoestrogen). In supplement research, phytoestrogens are relevant for menopausal symptom management, hormonal hair changes, and bone health. Their dual agonist/antagonist action means effects vary by tissue type and hormonal context.
