Probiotics

Live microorganisms that confer health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts.

Probiotics are live microorganisms (primarily Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species) that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. They modulate the gut microbiome, support intestinal barrier function, and influence immune responses. Evidence supports specific strains for antibiotic-associated diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and certain allergic conditions. The effects are highly strain-specific — benefits demonstrated for one strain cannot be extrapolated to another. Colony-forming units (CFU) count indicates potency, with most studied doses ranging from 1 billion to 100 billion CFU.
